McMurdo Station Antarctica

McMurdo station from observation hill taken during the summer
here. It has more snow over everything now. It is a group of several buildings built on volcanic rock. Mcmurdo is a small town that will hold over 1100 people in the summer here Oct-Feb, and a few hundred in the winter Mar-Sept.

McMurdo with Observation hill in the background. We again have more snow than this picture shows and it is not this light out yet.

McMurdo station in mid summer (Jan-Feb) when the ice can be broken by an ice breaker ship and a cargo ship comes in once a year to bring in supplies. All other supplies have to be airlifted in.
Note Mount Erebus (12,448 ft) in the background with the volcanic plume coming out of the crater. The crater on top is 900 ft deep and 2,640 ft wide.

Another view of the station in summer.

McMurdo now - August 22, 2005
-22 degrees and with the wind about -40

Truck in town with Mat tracks instead of wheels.
McMurdo is monster truck heaven.

Door handles are similar to a large meat locker door.
This one is on the inside of the "gerbil gym" door. The "gerbil gym" is the aerobics gym with several pieces of exercise equipment.

Next - 50th birthday!

Best wishes to family and friends!
